I wrote the People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals,
and ask PETA to raise hell
for the children of the world.
There are broken animals in the
Stauffer’s Animal Crackers packages.
Buffalos and sheep with missing body parts,
camels with no humps, legs or heads.
They herd these animals into flimsy cellophane containers
and ships them throughout the world.
They’re not in those colorful sturdy Barnum circus boxes
of my childhood.
Children should not see the broken, crippled animals
that are wounded in the board rooms
and assemble lines
for the pursuit of profit.
I didn’t mention the elephant in a business suit
